How do I make the cash drawer open only when cash is involved?

You want the cash drawer to open automatically when cash is involved in a payment, withdrawal or refund.

Enable Smart cash drawer for the relevant cash register:

  1. In the Admin Center, go to Setup → Cash registers.
  2. Select the cash register.
  3. Open Menu → Settings.
  4. Enable Smart cash drawer.
  5. Click OK.

The cash drawer will then open automatically only when cash is involved, including cash payments, withdrawals and refunds.
